Girls’ lacrosse ready for first game

The girls’ lacrosse team plays its first game of the season against Viera High School on Friday. Since Jan. 31, the girls have been on the field practicing for the upcoming season.

“I am very excited about the first game. Last year Viera was our favorite team to play,” Coach Shelia Owen said. “They are a strong team so that means we need to be playing at our best.”

Due to the changes with lacrosse becoming a Florida High School Athletic Association sport, the cost to play increased and turned some players away. But on the other side, new players have joined.

“I feel the girls are as prepared as we can be at this point,” Owen said. “They practice hard on the field with me and have been working on stick skills outside of practice. I see improvement in both the returning players and the new players at every practice.”

JV is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and varsity is expected to follow at 7 p.m.

“Viera was a really fun team to play, and our team learned a lot of new techniques from them,” sophomore Christine Sherry said. “I can’t wait for our first game.”
