French Congrès participants selected

French Congrès team members have been selected after tryouts for several competing categories were recently completed. Every year, French teacher Jennifer Walker assembles a group of people to represent the school in an annual statewide competition held in Orlando. The students compete in levels of French from beginning to Advanced Placement in various events such as reading comprehension, speaking, poetry recitation, brain bowl and play production.

“We’ve come in first place in the state for the past two years,” Walker said. “We’re hoping to be able to do that again. The 10 past consecutive years we’ve won the study abroad international scholarship offered by the French government.”

Walker said she expects similar results from this year’s team.

“I think they’re going to do awesome,” she said. “I have some really, really strong students.”

The competition not only provides numerous opportunities including scholarships, but it’s also a positive and fun event for many.

“There was some pressure to win, but I did speaking and the play and it was a great experience,” French Honor Society Vice President Sarah Tanke said regarding her past Congrès experiences. “Practicing with the other members for the play was always fun, and we had a really great time.”
