West Shore’s Class of 2002 — the first graduating class in school history — will hold its inaugural reunion June 29 through July 1.

Among the weekend’s highlights will be the opening of a time capsule buried 10 years ago at the senior picnic. The capsule contains predictions as to what students thought they would be when they were older along with other personal belongings.  Bob McLaren, a former West Shore history teacher and current a social studies resource teacher for Brevard Public Schools, said he’s looking forward to the capsule’s opening.

“It will be interesting to see what actually came true,” he said.

The first of three events is scheduled to be a kick-off diner at The Mansion located near the Melbourne Causeway. The next will be a formal dance held at the Oaks Courtyard in Melbourne. The weekend will wind up with a family picnic at Pelican Beach Park in Satellite Beach.

Class members are set to arrive from around the globe, including such places such as Germany, Korea, Colorado and California. This reunion will set a precedent for all others to follow.

“The motto of the Class of 2002 is ‘Always First,’” McLaren said. “This reunion keeps that motto alive. Hopefully, future classes will take their lead and bring their classes together.”
