Downtown Melbourne 5k run slated for April 2

The 29th Annual Downtown Melbourne 5K Run and Walk takes place April 2. The entry fee is $20 until April 2 and $25 on race day. The Youth Series run is free. The men’s race will begin at 7:30 a.m., the women’s race will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the Youth Series will begin at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit The Haven, a local shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children.
“The race has been a big success in the past years,” Faculty Athletics Representative Frank Webbe said. “I don’t have the exact amount of money raised from last year, but it was around $5,000”.

Race packet pick-up will be April 1 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Running Zone on Wickham Road and on race day packet pick-up will be at Holmes Park at the corner of Melbourne Avenue and Melbourne Court.

“It has the race shirt, the runner’s pin-on number with safety pins, a few ads for other races, discount cards and a few sundries,” Webbe said.

Large trophies will be awarded to the top three overall runners and the top Masters, runners over the age of 40. Smaller trophies will be awarded to the top three male and female runners for each of the 15 age groups. The awards will be given out at 9:15 a.m. on race day.

Additionally, food will be available to the runners after the race.
