Day, Burns advance to track state

For Sarah Day and Lauren Burns, Wednesday’s Class 2A District 22 was only a step on their way to bigger and better track meets as both were the only West Shore students to qualify to go to regionals some time next week.

“I PR’d (personal record) for this year in high jump which I’m very happy about,” Burns said. “I’ve been working really hard at practice to clear 5 feet.”

Because of a stress fracture in her foot, Day made her first appearance of the season at the district meet.

“I’m happy she’s here. I just wish she would have been more a part of our team,” senior Maegan Muir said.

Day — who recently signed to run for the University of Florida next fall — qualified for regionals in both the 3,200 and 1,600.

“Sarah is an amazing runner,” junior Lexie Krehbiel said. “I’m glad she ran with us today.”

The girls team scored 35 points and got eighth place while the boys scored 1 point and got ninth.

“The boys all tried their best in each individual events and that’s all that really matters,” Coach Drew Schaefer said.

The meet lasted from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and by the end of the day, weariness was starting to show.

“Both Braden (Schopke) and Connor (Stokes) were injured when it was time for the 3,200,” senior Ed Balboni said.
