Intense dance practice signals start of season

The Purr-fections varsity dance team is getting ready for its season to come in to full swing.

“We have camp dances that we learned over the summer that we perform at the basketball and soccer games,” senior Jesse Shaw said. “In the meantime, we are also working on our competition routines. We have competition in January, and we also hold our own showcase called ‘Dance for a Cure.’ We raise money for breast cancer, so we put that on, that’s in January too, and then we have regionals the day after.”

Even the practices themselves are very focused.

“We have practices every day Monday and Friday after school for three hours for varsity. We basically go over what we’re going to be dancing for games and we clean it,” sophomore Bella Stazzone said. “We also clean and polish our dances for competition and run the dances over and over again.”

Cleaning the dances means to perfect the routine, which takes a lot of time.

“We have to go through every single part of the dance and make sure everyone’s doing the same movements, and we all look as one,” Shaw said. “And that can be tedious.”
