Crew team pleased with regatta outcome

Space Coast Crew finished six out of 24 teams for overall points at Turkey Lake Orlando on Saturday. The Women’s Varsity 4 placed fourth out of 20, and the Women’s Varsity 8 finished seventh out of 11. The Men’s Lightweight four placed sixth out of 14 boats.

Junior Steven Thomas was pleased with the results.

“Compared to last weekend I think we did really good,” he said. “We were in the second-fastest flight and we got first.”

The lightweight four had an equipment malfunction last weekend at the race in Jacksonville in which Thomas couldn’t move his seat and that affected their entire race. But Saturday, everything worked as expected.

“I was pretty happy with it,” Thomas said. “I didn’t set my expectations too high. I wanted to keep them realistic.”

The crew season will conclude toward the end of April, finishing with the states regatta after a busy season filled with scrimmages and big races. Thomas said he’s ready for what is to come.

“I’m looking forward to States, and how the Varsity 8 is going to do there,” he said. “Then Regionals because we’ll be taking the light 4 depending on how we do the rest of the season.”
