Crew opens season with two medals

Space Coast Crew completed it’s first sprint-season regatta Saturday at Turkey Lake in Orlando. The Novice Regatta is run exclusively for novice rowers, leaving the varsity rowers to help and show their support for their teammates.

“As it got closer, I got really nervous for my first race,” sophomore Jacob Eberwein said. “The anticipation was killing me, and it only got worse when the officials were aligning the boats to race. When the race started though, I forgot the nerves and got focused and my boat ended up in third place officially, unofficially we got second place. There was some confusion with the boats, so we took third.”

The team walkd away with two third-place medals, one from the men’s team and one from the women’s. The women’s novice four received one of the medals and the men’s novice four received the other.

“Now that I’ve had a taste of what the races are like, I’m not so nervous about upcoming regattas,” sophomore Maya Burley said. “It was so exciting crossing the finish line and even better hearing that we got third place.”

Now that this “trial run,” is out of the way, the team is back to training for its next regatta at the C-54 canal.
