Latin students will create projects based on ancient Roman or Greek mythology for the remainder of the school year. They will choose to either do an essay or use a creative method such as painting or sculpting to display the topic they decide to research.
“It’s pretty open,” Latin teacher Jennifer Staton said. “I will listen to whatever idea students have and decide if they can do it or not.”
Though students who choose to do a creative project do not have to write an essay, they have to write a paragraph detailing how their creation incorporates their research while also including a bibliography.
“I have a rubric which outlines what I’m looking for in each aspect of the project, whether it’s a creative or an essay,” Staton said.
Latin student Ezra Yoro chose to make a creative project based on Apollo and Hyacinthus, both of which are figures in Greek mythology.
“My friend [eighth-grader] Zoi V. really inspired me,” Yoro said. “I thought her watercolor painting for the state competition was really cool.”
He is using watercolors to create his project and expects to finish by the two-week deadline.
“I have been using watercolor paints a lot recently, so it felt right to use them for this project,” Yoro said.
Students will also have to complete a final test for the class.
“I’m really prepared for the final,” Yoro said. “I feel like I really understand the material.”
