Junior Ian Chan recently was named Brevard’s 2012-2013 Sunshine State Scholar. The award recognizes achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, often called STEM. Students are selected based on test scores, grade-point average, advanced coursework and successful participation in STEM activities.
“It’s a statewide competition and the district selects one winner. Each high school submits one nominee and the district selects the winner,” Director of Testing Mike Drake said. “We formed a committee which included administration, guidance counselors, as well as math and science teachers to decide who West Shore’s nominee would be.”
This is the second year in a row that West Shore has won.
“Rashad Abdulla won last year, and I don’t think a school has won two years in a row in a while,” Drake said.
