‘Cats race through State championships

David Thompson and Ben Lack

The boys cross country team finished 21st out of twenty four at the State championships last Saturday, Nov. 7. The girls came in 24th out of twenty four. Junior Austin Camps placed 12th with a time of 16:16.62 in the 5k. This was the 2nd best time for any runner in Brevard County.

“State was really fun,” Camps said. “I could have run smarter, if I went out much slower and paced myself better. I ran the same time as last year and the course was slower this year so I feel like I did better, however we moved up from 2A to 3A so it’s a harder classification and I got 12th as opposed to 8th. Our team did much better than last year, we didn’t even make it to regionals last year and this year we made it to state which is a huge achievement. We are only losing one runner from Varsity, Travis [Hoibraten], he’s a senior this year.  From last season we didn’t lose any runners so we’re just constantly getting better and better.  I want to break 16 [minutes] for a 5k next season. I feel the team has a good shot at getting top 10 or 15 at State next season.”

Some runners were chosen to race in the Foot Locker Cross Country South Regional Championships in North Carolina on Nov. 28.
