Canopy construction set to begin next week

The canopy construction over the commons area beside the cafeteria is scheduled to begin May 25.

“It’s going to be a great meeting place for all the students on campus. Everyone will love it,” Assistant Principal for facilities Jim Melia said.

The building of the four main pillars of the canopy is set to begin two days after students are released for summer vacation.

“As an upcoming junior, I’m ecstatic that only the juniors and seniors will get to eat lunch outside under the canopy,” sophomore Desiree Corbin said. “It actually makes me really excited for next school year.”

Contractors were on campus last week planning for the addition of more tables and trash receptacles outside, and surveying ongoing this week.

“It’ll be such a nice shaded area to protect the students from the hot Florida sun,” Melia said.

If all goes according to plan, Melia said the canopy will be completed on or before July 4.
