Three consecutive losses have jeopardized the boys varsity basketball team’s hopes of making it to regionals. The team is making changes following defeats against Melbourne, Palm Bay, and Sebastian River.
“We get mad at each other a lot,” said junior forward Ethan Marana. “Instead of fighting the other team, we’re fighting against ourselves.”
The team faced a seven-point loss to Palm Bay.
“If we won just one of those games, we would have had a much higher chance of going to regionals,” Marana said. “It would boost us higher in the rankings, and if you’re top eight, you go to regionals.”
Practices have been adjusted to focus on the areas they struggled with in past games.
“We’ve been focusing on defense and moving the ball around,” sophomore Shoaib Ahmed said. “We’re trying to avoid going one-on-one against the defender and trying to pass it around more.”
Junior forward Boston Boucher said the team knows there’s little margin for error in their remaining five games.
“If we do everything right, we definitely still have a chance of making it to regionals,” Boucher said. “At this point, there’s really no room for mistakes.”
With these changes, Ahmed said he is confident in the team’s ability to win its upcoming game.
“Our team has a good chance of winning these games,”Ahmed said. “Our team can put up a fight, so I’m looking forward to it.”
