Junior John Mullen joined the Board Game Club after two of his friends founded it. The club focuses on the fun of different board and card games, specifically short and fast-paced games.
“I started the club because my friends and I love playing games,” junior Drew Newlin, one of the founders, said. “We used to play during lunch, and I figured other people might be interested too, so we made it official.”
Newlin, along with his friends, said he loves playing different types of games and sharing the uniqueness of which games they play. However, the club’s game preferences have evolved to accommodate time constraints, focusing on accessible games that can be finished during Power Hour.
“Last year we played more complicated games; we played a lot of Catan,” Newlin said. “This year, the hit has been Bananagrams.”
Mullen also said he liked playing the game.
“Bananagrams is really fun, especially when we have a lot of people because it’s really fast-paced,” Mullen said.
Both Mullen and Newlin described the club’s atmosphere as relaxed and welcoming.
“The atmosphere is laid back and chill,” Mullen said. “You can just be there, not playing a game if you’re not in the mood. You have food there, so it’s really just calm and fun.”
Although the Board Game Club remains relatively small, its members appreciate the close-knit community it provides. Whether competing in fast-paced games or simply enjoying the company of friends, the club serves as a space where Newlin and Mullen can bring their group and relax.
“It’s just mainly me and my friends, we kind of just play games,” Newlin said. “It would be kind of cool to expand to some point.”
