Researchers prepare for international fair

Four seniors will move on to the International Science and Engineering Fair being held in Phoenix from May 13 to May 17.

“Brevard County has eight students going to the International Science and Engineering Fair to represent our county,” science research teacher Mary Anderson said. “Of those eight students, four are from West Shore. It is extremely rare that half of the students would be from a single school, so I’m really proud of all the kids involved.”

Michelle Chin, Rashad Abdulla, Varun Bansal and Sangamithra Vardhan will travel to the fair and compete with high school researchers from across the world.

“I am positive they will do great and have an amazing time while they are in Phoenix,” science research teacher Paula Ladd said. “It’s always been a great experience for students in years past. I’m sure it will be this year too.”

Because the fair extends into the same day as graduation, there will be a few time crunches.

“There are two award ceremonies for the fair, one on the night of 16th and one on the morning of 17th,” Anderson said. “They really wanted to go to both of them, but the way the flights worked out, they will have to miss the one on Friday morning. With this, their flight will be arriving in Orlando in the late afternoon, so if everything works out, they should be able to make it to graduation.”

This is the first time Anderson will attend the international fair, so she shares the students’ enthusiasm.

“I’m really excited to go,” she said. “I think it will be such an interesting experience to see all the different projects and watch West Shore students compete in the fair.”
