Girls’ varsity basketball prepares to play with new coach

The girls’ basketball season is scheduled to play its first game of the season against Space Coast on Nov. 8. The upcoming season will be a different look for the players and coaches, as longtime Coach Derrick Hamilton stepped down after several seasons. In addition, five players from last year’s team graduated.

“I think the team is doing well with the new coach this season because he is not technically new this season,” junior Jaylynn Jeter said. “Since Coach Hugh [Bain] has coached JV and assisted with varsity, almost everyone is familiar with him and how he coaches.”

The players have already established relationships with the JV coaches, which usually takes some time. However, due to the loss of seniors, the team is facing a hurdle.

“This season will be rough since we are losing a big portion of our varsity team, so we are basically starting over with a new team,” junior Chloe Garoust said. “Our team was pretty successful last year mostly because of the seniors and the talent that was on the team, so losing the seniors will have a negative impact on the team as a whole.”
