The varsity volleyball team has made it to playoffs — along with every other team in the district due to the pandemic. 

“Everybody qualifies for playoffs this year, but somehow we ended up No. 1 in our division,” junior Lily Winsten said. “Our team was randomly selected to become first seed in the volleyball districts, which means we are already put into the semifinals. I think if we work hard and put everything into it we can come out on top and be really successful in playoffs this year.”

Under the pandemic format, the Lady Wildcats are seeded No.1 in the tournament based on a blind draw selected by computer. 

Senior Grace Kirschner said she’s confident in her team and what it can accomplish even during the pandemic. 

“We definitely have a shot in the playoffs,” Kirschner said. “Volleyball is 90 percent a mental game, so if everyone is doing their best with high spirits we should definitely be able to pull through and win a title.” 

The varsity girls have been battling the obstacles thrown by the pandemic, according to junior Jess Marzano.

“Our team hasn’t really been affected by corona, other than not having a freshman team so the program isn’t taking in as many girls,” she said. “We’ve been having a fun, great season so far, and hopefully we make it to district finals and become playoff champs.”

As the No. 1 seed, the Lady Wildcats will take on the winner of Tuesday’s match between Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School and Melbourne Central Catholic on Wednesday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
