New track coach gets early start

Athletes attending last week’s track and field meeting voted to begin conditioning early this year, and Coach Sue Gregory says she’s pleased.

“Those who start early will be better at the end of the season,” said Gregory, who became took the job after Jason Whitworth stepped down for health reasons. Whitworth will still be in charge of distance events and workouts.

Last year, Gregory coached sprints and hurdles.

“It is a big change from having Coach Finch and Coach Whitworth,” Gregory said .

Junior Luke Redito appears enthusiastic about the early conditioning.

“It’s always a good idea to do track conditioning because it gives you some fitness going in to the season,” he said.

Gregory says she’s unsure whether athletes will practice during the upcoming Winter Break.

“I know how tempting it is to become a couch potato and not do anything over the break,” she said.
