Cross country teams finish sixth

The recently reunited boys’ and girls’  varsity cross country teams both finished sixth overall in the Sebastian River High School meet Saturday. Jacob Smithe placed 13th and Luke Redito placing 27th, while Sarah Day placed 14th and Kate Crowley placed 17th.
For the previous couple of week’s only parts of the team were able to attend the meets because of  other commitments or injuries.
“Contrasting with our expectations, the course ended up being surprisingly slow; most likely due to all of the rain, which made the grass hard to get good leg turnover on,” said Luke Redito, a top varsity runner. “But overall the team ran fairly solid with pretty consistent times compared to the previous meets. However, there were some personal bests such as Christian Hayes, who dropped his time 31 seconds. With districts approaching, I’m excited to see what our team can do and hopefully finish up the season strong.”
Varsity runner Jacob Smith said the now that that team is at full strength, it’s time to focus on the upcoming district meet.
“This meet was our last official meet of the season, so now with two weeks to train until Districts, we are going to start tapering in order to reach peak performance by time Districts is here,” he said. “It’s nice that we have a week off from racing before districts so that we can ensure our legs are fully rested and ready to compete. The girls’ and boy’s teams are both hoping for big individual [personal records] and placing strong as a team in order to qualify as one of the top four team that advances to Regionals.”
