Runners gear up for first meet

Members of the cross country team opened the season’s first practice with a two-mile time trial Aug. 15 in order to determine the stages they are in with their training process. The run also provided a preview of how both the girls’ and boys’ teams might fare this season.

“I’m excited about the new runners because there are a lot of middle-schoolers that came out,” said varsity captain Kate Crowley, who indicated that young recruits can keep the team strong for years after the old runners leave.

Team members have now turned their attention to the Preseason Jamboree at Wickham Park on Sept. 3. That meet will determine the top seven runners who will make up the varsity team.

“Our meet schedule is very different this year, and I’m going to miss not going to some of the races that I’ve competed in since seventh grade,” said top varsity runner Jacob Smithe. “I’m also excited that we will be able to experience running some new courses. It should be a good season.”
