Boys’ tennis falls in district finals

Fighting to the last serve, junior Chris Wong and the boys’ tennis team lost to 21-11 the St. Edwards School Pirates in the district finals Tuesday. Wong, among several Wildcats who took matches to tiebreaker sets, fell 7-6-, 7-6. The match was held in Port St. Lucie.

“It was a tough loss to end a great season,” Wong said. “We did OK, but could’ve done better.”

The success of the Wildcats this year came as a surprise to the players as well as opponents, who were shocked to see a team that struggled mightily last year do so well in 2012.

“Honestly, I thought we got worse this year,” Wong said. “The good thing is, so did everyone else”

Senior Ankur Mehindru said he believes his team could have achieved even more.

“[The District Final] was on clay courts,” Mehindru said. “If we had played them on hard courts, we would be district champs. I honestly thought we could’ve won regionals”

The long trip to Jupiter, Fla., was highlighted by seeing the presidential motorcade on the highway, traveling down to Boca Raton for President Barak Obama’s stop at Florida Atlantic University.

Wong said he thinks the team can overcome the loss of two seniors, Mehindru and Jack Krasny.

“I think we’ll be as good or better next year,” Wong said. “But you never know, we thought we’d be terrible this year, and we were district runner-ups.”
