Sign up in cafeteria for ugly sweater contest

Got a really ugly sweater hiding in the attic? On Dec. 16, the school will hold its first-ever ugly sweater contest and it’s open to all who wish to participate. All of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

Guidance office clerk Dixie Thompson came up with the contest idea and presented it to Principal Rick Fleming.

“I was watching TV at home one night and I saw a commercial for an ugly sweater contest,” Thompson said. “I thought it would be a good idea to raise money for a needy family here at West Shore.”

Students must pay $1 in order to participate in the contest, and Thompson already is collecting the fee in the cafeteria during lunch through Dec. 13.

Faculty members also are invited to participate.

“I have two ugly sweaters that I can’t decide between,” Fleming said, “I am glad that the faculty can also participate in this contest and we can help out a family in need.”

On Dec. 16,  participating students will go to the front of the cafeteria and the rest of the student body will vote based on the loudness of their applause. The student winner will receive an ice cream sandwich.
