West Shore was featured on Wednesday’s Orlando Fox-35’s “Good Day” morning show. For the second consecutive year, the school received the honor after registering 1,939 votes or 41 percent of the total in Orlando Fox-35’s “Cool School of the Week” contest during Feb. 21-Feb 25. Zenith Career Center was the closest competition with 1,674 votes (35 percent) followed by Deltona High School with 1,119 votes (15 percent). Crooms Academy of Information Technology registered 15 votes or less than 1 percent of the total votes cast.

“Fox-35 originally asked to have a live broadcast at 9:15 a.m., but we asked to tape it at 8 a.m. as to not interrupt our classes,” Assistant Principal Jim Melia said via email.

Cameras and students arrived around 7:45 a.m. for the taping.

“It was really exciting because when the camera guy got there, we knew it was the real deal,” Senior Class President Megan Poulsen said. “The Senior Class representatives were the most excited. We wanted to throw Marjorie [Wagoner, Senior Class treasurer] in the air, but that didn’t really work out.”

Supporters of each school voted online after registering with the TV station’s website.

When West Shore won last year, four on-campus segments were shown during Fox 35’s morning programming for a total of eight minutes of air time.

“It was an opportunity for our cheerleading squad to be on television, which we’ve never done before,”  junior Cayleigh Reeder said of 2010’s show. “The reporters did their reporting, and we just made it peppy. It felt good to be appreciated for all the hard work West Shore students put in.”
