Eighth grader wins annual spelling bee

The annual middle school spelling bee was held on Jan. 20 ran by the National English Honor Society and eighth grader Madison H. won the competition by spelling a Canadian dish called ‘poutine’.

“I was surprised that I won,” she said. “I was not going to do this at first because I was really nervous but then my parents convinced me too.”

All 7th and 8th grade Language Arts teachers held classroom Spelling Bees and the top 4 students in each class got to compete in the Middle School Bee according to NEHS sponsor Carrie Glass. There were 15 contestants in total.

According to Madison the competition was competitive.

“I knew a few people and they were all really good so it was a little bit intimidating,” she said.

Now she is gearing up for the county spelling bee on Feb. 22 where she will compete with other seventh and eighth graders in the county.

“I will spend a lot of time studying the words and writing them down,” Madison said.
