Jazz band tunes up for holiday shows

‘Tis the season for the jazz band to finish up rehearsals for the winter concert and the annual Barnes and Noble show.

“Jazz band will join our three other bands for the Winter Concert,” teacher Carol Allen said. “We will be playing in Eau Gallie High School’s auditorium at 6:30 p.n. on Nov. 28.”

This concert is nothing new to trumpet player Dakota Helbig, who has played in various shows with the jazz band over the past two years.

“I’m excited about our concert that is coming up,” the junior said. “Practicing for it isn’t very thrilling, but the time we spend digging through the pieces is made up for during the performance. I think we will do pretty well.”

The Barnes and Noble book fair will be held after school on Nov. 30. Jazz band will begin playing at 7 p.m. and perform for an hour. Helbig fondly recalls past performances a the venue.

“The Barnes and Noble gig my favorite show,” he said. “It was a lot of fun last year, and I’m really looking forward to it this year. Everyone is really relaxed and excited at the same time. We are performing, which is always a rush, but we are also in a quiet bookstore. The atmosphere created from those two factors is one of the best aspects of the whole thing.”

The Nov. 30 show will be at the Barnes and Noble bookstore at 1955 West New Haven Ave. in West Melbourne and the Winter Concert on Nov. 28 at Eau Gallie High is located at 1400 Commodore Blvd.
