Swimmers shape up for fall season

After losing its seniors to graduation, the swim team hopes to jump back into the water, ready to swim for the upcoming fall season.

“We have 38 students who have said they are interested in swimming next year,” swim team coordinator Alene Heuser said. “I believe the coach does plan to hold tryouts if there are more than 50.”

But, according to some swimmers, it doesn’t hurt to get some practice before the season officially starts.

“I’ve gone to a few summer trainings over the past years, and I’ve cut my backstroke times by a few seconds,” sophomore Sierra Condo said. “It truly is helpful if you’re looking to improve your skills.”

The Brevard Swim Club will be offering two swim programs this summer for younger swimmers with an interest in joining the team. Held at the Florida Institute of Technology, they will offer a preseason high-school program with the age group 7 to 14. Practice times are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and the cost is $75 per month.

“We won’t really know the final count [of the team] until the team starts in early August,” Heuser said.  “We are certainly excited about the upcoming season.”
