Senior Christian Walker placed 8th out of 16 in the triple jump at the Track and Field state competition. Out of all the athletes, only the top eight receive a medal, making Walker the first Wildcat in school history to earn the honor at states. His distance of 44 feet and 6 inches is made more impressive by the fact that Walker was ill with a sinus infection on the day of the meet.
“I didn’t initially know [that I got a medal],” Walker said. “Just going to states was amazing, it was really fun. I didn’t expect to do as well as I did, or stay as consistent as I did, especially because I wasn’t feeling well that day. It was an amazing experience, I felt like it was extremely fun, and the fact that I later found out I got a medal was just something to remember about states from track in high school.
“[All my teammates] were happy for me, they said ‘Wow that’s amazing’. Our whole track team is so supportive of me, and the ones that know especially are. A lot of people don’t know yet because I missed a few days of school after that.”
Walker’s top half finish at states is just a continuation of the success he has had throughout the season. Another accomplishment of his this season is taking home third place at the regional competition in April.
