Spanish Honor Society inducts 16 members

The National Spanish Honor Society recently welcomed 16 new members during a ceremony in the media center.

“It was really cool,” sophomore and new NSHS member Meghan Matthys said. “We all sat in rows and held candles. The leaders gave all these motivational speeches in Spanish and [club sponsor Luis] Martin did too. They each had a person at the end of the row light their candles and pass the flame down to the rest of the people in the row. So we all lit our candles from the same flame.”

The National Spanish Honor Society represents more than its name indicates.

“It’s not only the Spanish Honor Society, it’s the Spanish and Portuguese [Honor Society],” Martin said.

Club members usually meet on Thursdays during Power Hour B every two weeks. So far the club has not planned any events, but traditionally organizes various activities and events each year.

“Here in our school we have done from doing handcrafts in class to putting on the International Fiesta yearly,” Martin said. “We’re planning on having the International Fiesta coming up in the spring.”
