Spanish Honor Society gears up for Fiesta

The Spanish Honor Society plans to hold an International Fiesta on campus next semester to celebrate the cultures of the languages learned. Students participating in the club will be picking a country that speaks the language and prepare food that represents its culture.

“I’m hoping that this year the fiesta will be bigger and represent a wider selection of cultures by including the other clubs,” Cheng said.

The Spanish Honor Society holds meetings twice a month in Room 2-103 and it is intended for high-school students. Its members are encouraged to practice the language by socializing with each other within a given period of time.

“Members have to have a good grade in their Spanish classes or when they took Spanish in the past through AP,” said Isabel Cheng (11), the president of the Spanish Honor Society.

In addition to the International Fiesta, the society also has other ideas in mind.

“Right now before Christmas time they want to decorate cookies and things like that,” said Olga Evers, the world languages department chair and one of the school’s Spanish teachers.

Before the society can make plans, however, it needs to officially induct its members, which is the first step it will be taking toward future projects its members would like to put into action.

“We are going to have induction ceremonies in December,” Evers said. “We don’t have a date yet, but it’s coming up. We’ll have it before the end of the year.”
