MathCounts team gets ready for competition

Sixteen seventh- and eight-graders have been meeting from 8 a.m to 8:45 a.m. every Tuesday morning in Steve Thomas’ classroom to practice for upcoming MathCounts competitions.

“The students do practice-tests, and then they do teamwork and learn patterns and formulas that are essential for the competition,” Thomas said.

The first competition is scheduled to take place in January and is between students on the team. In February the team will attend the district competition, and the state competition will be held in March.

Last year the team placed first in the district and ninth in the state.

Seventh-grader MathCounts team member Ansar S. said he thinks the team will do well again this year.

“I think we’ll win,” he said. “We have a lot of smart people on the team.”
