Math team shines in district tournament

Twenty-four West Shore students recently competed against students from 24 other schools in the Secondary Mathematics Tournament held in Viera.

The students participated in teams of  four in six different levels. They took a written group test and participated in a “math bowl.” West Shore reveived at least third place or better in each category.

Members of the pre-algebra team Ansar S., Adam L., Billy M., and T.J. T. received first place in the written round and the math bowl. Algebra 1 team members Nick S., Austin C., River G., and Neill J. took first place on the written test and second place in the math bowl, in which they placed right behind Southwest Middle School.

The Geometry team with  Srimayi Tenali, Connor Courtney, Micah Howell, and Hunter Schwartz received second place in the written test, placing after Cocoa Beach. They also took second place in the math bowl, placing behind Covenant Christian.

The Algebra II team took second place on the written test and third place in the math bowl, with team members Sarah Arends, Emma Kalvan, Shelley Mitchell and Samantha Grant.

Esha Bansal, Andrew Lim, Caleb Bryant, and Robert Edmiston earned third place on the written test and the math bowl for the Precalculus team.

In the Calculus division, Lexie Krehbiel, Ian Chan, Varun Bansal, and Rashad Abdulla placed first in both the written test and the math bowl.

The competition was held April 14.
