Instead of the algebra and geometry problems, freshmen and sophomores usually find in Steven Thomas’ class, Thursday they will compete for extra-credit points, and indulge in eating the Little Debbies snack cakes Thursday.

The activity was created in honor of Pi Day,  celebrated around the world on March 14. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. 

“I like the fact that I get sugar at 8:30 in the morning,” said freshman Caroline Cahill, who ordered a fudge round and no drink.

“Got to stick with that water,” Cahill said. “I’m cheap, even though it was 25 cents.”

Thomas offered fudge rounds, star crunches and peanut clusters for 25 cents each, and Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, and water for 50 cents. There was a dollar limit for the amount each student could purchase.

“I am looking forward to the celebration of pi the number, but more importantly, I’ll get to eat four fudge rounds, the max number of food consumption,” freshman Rhyann Martin said.
