Heuston’s sculpture takes Best of Show

Entering a sculpture made out of only recycled materials, senior Victoria Heuston won Best of Show at the 2012 School Board Art Competition.

“The piece of artwork I entered is called ‘Tide Wash’ because the materials I used were recycled water bottles and detergent bottles, such as Tide laundry detergent,” Heuston said. “The reason why I enjoy experimenting with plastic is that I can deconstruct a bottle and turn it into something completely different, such as a coral reef scene. By combining these different textures I completed my idea of creating a coral reef scene as a relief against a Plexiglas back.”

Heuston has entered the competition twice before and won a merit award her sophomore year.

“This frustrated me because in other art shows I have won for those same pieces, but I was extremely pleased to finally have won recognition of Best of Show in high school in my senior year,” Heuston said.

The others West Shore winners include Angela Boynton, purchase award and second place in digital art/photography, Marianthi Karas, first place in digital art/photography and Kaylee McCormack, merit award for 3D art.
