Girls cross country team runs district race

Competing against 12 teams, the girls’ cross country team placed 5th at its district meet on Oct. 28 at Wickham Park. The team was expected to place 4th but finished behind Lincoln Park High School.

“I’m excited to hear we placed 5th overall,” freshman Elysia Nemes said.

Senior Karina Garridolee had a more nervous outlook regarding the team’s placement.

“I’m not disappointed with my performance,” Garridolee said. “But if we race the same times next week, then I might be a little.”

The regional meet will be held at 8 a.m. on Nov. 5, with the girls competing once again at Wickham Park. The top eight teams will qualify for the state meet, which will be held on Nov. 12 in Tallahassee.

“I think we will qualify for states,” Team Captain Ashley Hilmes said. “We have trained hard enough to make it.”

Hilmes and freshman Ashvika Maddikonda both landed in the top 25 finishers for their race.

“We’re really on the edge,” Garridolee said. “But I think we have a clear shot at making states”.
