The junior varsity girls’ basketball team beat Melbourne Central Catholic 33-15, but the varsity team lost 36-32 on Nov. 20 in the West Shore gym.
Freshman Kerri Jadunandan led the JV with 7 points followed by seventh-grader Ashton Braid who added 6 points. This is freshman Taylor Smith’s first time beating MCC.
“We played pretty good,” freshman Taylor Smith said. “Kerri [Jadunandan] and I were so happy because it was our first time beating MCC since we’ve been here.”
Senior Lydia Kline led the varsity team offensively, tallying 10 points, and junior Rebecca Castillo finished with 7 points. Senior Kaitlin Inganna led the team defensively, registering two blocked shots, four steals, and seven rebounds. Inganna said the team’s new formation worked well defensively.
“We played a great game defensively,” Inganna said. “We had jumped into a new formation [1-3-1] to shut down the other team’s bigs, and it worked. Offensively, we are starting to gain more of a rhythm, but I think we have room for improvement.”
The teams next play Nov. 24 at home against Cocoa High.
