Space Coast Crew’s women’s junior 8 squad placed first with a race time of 11:50.8 in the East Coast Classic at Canal 54 in Fellsmere on Saturday.

“Winning the race felt amazing,” home-schooled sophomore Cailin Buchanan said. “It was surreal being placed first out of 11 teams.”

The regatta was held for teams from throughout Brevard County.

“This race is an indicator saying we can do this. First place is possible if you work hard,” sophomore Caroline Scott said. “The win gives us confidence for the next race at Jacksonville.”

The team has been preparing for Saturday’s First Coast Head Race in Jacksonville since August. The 5 kilometer annual regatta, the oldest head race in Florida, is held on on the St. Johns and Arlington Rivers.
