Boys’ hoops loses final away game

The boys’ varsity basketball team fell to John Carroll Catholic in its last away game of the regular season, falling to a negative season record after their 47-35 lost.

The ’Cats played their last away game of their season against the Rams who in their previous encounter scrapped by the Cats by one point.  The first half was close and competitive, and the Cats where taking a 1-point lead into the half, but it was John Carroll’s overwhelming second half that led to West Shore’s eventual downfall.  In the third quarter the Rams had edged forward to a lead and then went on a 17-7 fourth-quarter run.

The Cats were led by senior guard Anthony Wattwood who had 14 points, six rebounds and two steals.  Sophomore guard Chris Mikulas added  5 points and and four rebounds.

“Our defensive effort continues to not be up to par,” Coach Tony Riopelle said. “The game plan is usually pretty good, but the execution just hasn’t been there.”

Earlier in the week, the team rode the momentum of a 21-6 first quarter run to Brevard Christian to a 57-38.

Sophomore guard Greg Taveras had 16 points and a team high six steals.  Other notable contributors include  Mikulas who had 9 points and five rebounds and sophomore center Jake Diamond who had 7 points, five rebounds and one blocked shot.

“The key to victory was that we brought a lot of energy from start to finish,” Taveras said.  “We were in a huge slump in January and that is what motivated us to grab a win.”

The Cats where once again without their floor general Scott Adams who continues to battle injuries.  In Adams’ absence, junior varsity guards Stryker Sinclair and Shane Potter have been moved up in an attempt to fill in the void.
