Purrfections place second in jazz at county competition

The Purrfections varsity dance team placed second in the Jazz Division and third in the Pom Division at the 15th annual Brevard County Dance Competition held at Bayside High School on Saturday.

Bayside finished first in Jazz and in Pom, and Melbourne Central Catholic finished second in Pom.

“The team did great at competition; there were a few things here and there that could have been cleaner but the Purrfections killed it,” said sophomore and varsity dance team member Stephanie Shaw. “The team has worked so hard this year and should be proud of their accomplishments.”

The Purrfections also received the 110 percent award, which was voted on by the judges for extra effort and sportsmanship on and off the court. The middle school dancers competed in the junior varsity pom division against Merritt Island High School and won first place.

“I feel that we did really good for a middle school team competing against all high school dancers,” said eighth-grader Erin Sheridan.

Coach April Shaw was pleased with her teams’ performances.

“I was ecstatic about our middle school girls,” Shaw said. “I was extremely proud of the varsity girls for their effort. They have improved 100 percent since tryouts last April, and they danced their hearts out on Saturday.”

Shaw looks forward to competing during the 2011-2012 school year with her team.
“Next year I hope to take the feedback from the county judges, improve the routines, and compete in a second competition,” she said.
