Boys’ lacrosse dominates in opener

The boys’ lacrosse team defeated Cocoa Beach 19-1 in its season-opener Wednesday night. Senior Alex Autenrieb led the team with three goals. Seniors Chris Melchiori and Jack Nevins each contributed two goals and two assists.

“A game like that definitely sets the pace for the remainder of the season,” second-year starter sophomore Kyle Fitzgerald said. “It gives the team the drive to succeed and the will to play like we did Wednesday for the rest of the season, no matter the team.”

The boys travel to play the always-tough Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers tonight in MCC’s first game of the season.

“A game like this gives us the chance to really show what we’ve got,” Fitzgerald said. “People look down on us, but this our chance to show them that they were wrong about us.”

Fitzgerald confidence will be key as his team takes on the Hustlers, who have been district champs for three consecutive years.

“We can’t let them get into our heads,” he said. “We have to show them that we can compete with them and we aren’t just going to lie down and give them the win.”
