Math Counts team finishes ninth in state competition

Eighth-grader Esha B. placed 14th out of 250 students for the individuals and the school team placed ninth overall at the Math Counts State Competition in Altamonte Springs on March 25.

“The atmosphere of the competition was filled with excitement and friendly rivalry, it was that of the ideal competition,” Bansal said.

The team consists of Esha B., Conner C., Hunter S., Shelly M. and Caleb B.

“At the competition there were 46 teams from all over the state. The competition itself lasted for six to seven hours and was very intense,” team coach Steve Thomas said.

This year was the first time West Shore defeated its rivals from Southwest Middle School who placed 10th in the competition.

“One of our big accomplishments was that we finally beat Southwest who we have had a rivalry with for years. It felt great to do better than them,” Thomas said.

Seventh-graders who are interested in joining next year’s Mathcounts should attend meetings scheduled for for April 19, 26, and May 3. The meetings will start at 8 a.m. in Room 4-202.
